Couples Therapy in Brooklyn: The Work of Staying

For couples who are high-functioning everywhere except with each other.

Many of the couples I work with are accomplished, perceptive, and used to solving problems. But the relationship has become the one thing you cannot think your way through.

That is not a failure. It is the nature of love, and it is exactly what this work is for.

What Couples Therapy in Brooklyn Is Really For

Most couples arrive wanting to communicate better, or to fight less. Both are reasonable hopes, and better tools can help. But communication was never really the goal, and less conflict is not either. What you are actually longing for is to feel known by the person who knows you best.

So we go past technique to the real work: connection, intimacy, and the shared story of who the two of you are. We do not silence conflict, which only trades intimacy for a quieter kind of distance. We make it better conflict - the kind that tells the truth and leaves you more known, not more armored.

Marriage Counseling in Brooklyn for Couples Who Feel Stuck

Sometimes a relationship gets lodged in grievance - the same wound, rehearsed, until neither of you feels understood. Other times life does the damage: work, money, illness, or loss slips inside and becomes a problem between you, and you end up facing each other instead of the thing itself.

Much of this work is turning back around. We loosen the grip of old grievances and put the real problem back in front of you, where you can meet it side by side. You are not each other's adversary. You are the two people best placed to face what life is asking, together.

How I Work as a Couples Therapist in Brooklyn

I am Avi Steinhardt, a licensed clinical social worker in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I work with couples across every stage of partnership, from newly committed to decades in. The work draws on Gestalt therapy and relational psychodynamic approaches - less about scripts and techniques, more about what is actually happening between you in the room.

Sessions are available in person in Brooklyn and online across New York State. This is a premium, private-pay practice; I provide monthly superbills, and many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed 60 to 80 percent through out-of-network benefits.

Common Questions

How is couples therapy different from individual therapy?
In individual therapy the focus is you. In couples therapy the client is the relationship itself, the space between the two of you. I hold both perspectives at once, and we work on the patterns you create together rather than assigning fault.
Do you offer couples therapy in Brooklyn and online?
Both. I see couples in person in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and online across New York State, so we can meet wherever you are in NY.
What if my partner is reluctant to start?
That is common, and it is workable. Often one partner reaches out first. A single consultation, with no pressure to continue, is usually enough for a hesitant partner to feel what the work is actually like.
Do you work with couples considering separation or divorce?
Yes. Not every couple who comes in stays together, and that is not the measure of good work. Whether you are rebuilding or parting with care, therapy helps you do it with more honesty and less damage.
Is online couples therapy effective?
Very. For many couples, meeting from home means fewer missed sessions and more consistency, which is what actually drives change. Online sessions are available across New York State.
How much does couples therapy in Brooklyn cost?
This is a private-pay practice. I provide monthly superbills, and many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed 60 to 80 percent through out-of-network benefits. I will share current fees on our consultation call.

In Their Words

My husband and I found Avi when we were in a dark place. Avi was thoughtful, patient with us - and funny! We didn't know what we were looking for, but we found a fellow artist. He's so soulful, and he has this magical ability to help you unwind yourself. For that, we're grateful. We've asked him to work with our teenagers, family members, even friends. He's truly singular.

Avi has helped us better understand ourselves and each other, which has had a meaningful impact on our relationship.

We came to Avi because we felt trapped in arguments that would end with neither of us feeling understood.
