Family Therapy in Brooklyn That Looks at the Old Roles

Keeping relationships within a family healthy asks for a different kind of navigating than keeping a friendship or a marriage well. The ties are older, the roles run deeper, and there is no walking away lightly. Whether it is long-term conflict, reactivity that flares in seconds, or a new dynamic that has entered the family, we can get so dug in to our old patterns that the relationships begin to fray.

You are an adult with a full life of your own. And still, one phone call from a parent can make you fifteen again. Families hand out roles early - the peacemaker, the achiever, the responsible one, the easy child - and those roles rarely expire on their own. Family therapy, as I practice it, looks honestly at the family you came from, the role you were given in it, and what of it you want to keep, so that an old role becomes a choice instead of a reflex.

Family Counseling for Adults Navigating Parents and Siblings

Some families are enmeshed - so close that there was never quite room to become a self of your own, where a boundary is read as betrayal. Others are led by emotionally immature parents, leaving you with the strange grief of having been the adult in the room since childhood. Most are somewhere in between: love and difficulty in the same breath.

This work helps you see the pattern clearly and choose your place in it - what to say, what to protect, how much contact is right, and how to grieve what the family could not give. Sometimes that leads to repair. Sometimes it leads to distance held with more peace. Both are honest outcomes.

Whether or not we come to an agreement, the work honors where everyone stands - protecting the integrity of each person while supporting the strength of the bonds.

What Family Therapy in Brooklyn Helps With

People bring their families here in many forms - in person in Park Slope, Brooklyn, or online across New York. All of it belongs.

  • Conflict with a parent or sibling that replays the same argument
  • Enmeshment - closeness that left little room for a self of your own
  • Emotionally immature parents, and the grief of being the adult in the room
  • Addiction, mental illness, or grief entering the family and straining its bonds
  • A new dynamic in the family - a marriage, a move, an illness, a new child
  • Setting boundaries without burning the relationship down
  • Estrangement, low contact, and no contact - and the ambivalence around each
  • The strain of caring for aging parents
  • Sibling relationships shifting after a parent's illness or death
  • Bringing a partner into a complicated family

How I Work as a Family Therapist in Brooklyn

I am Avi Steinhardt, a licensed clinical social worker based in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Family therapy here can take two shapes: one adult working on the family they carry inside, or family members working together in the room. When we meet together, my role is to hold a space that honors where everyone stands - protecting the integrity of each person while supporting the strength of the bonds, whether or not we come to an agreement. The approach draws on Gestalt therapy and relational psychodynamic work, attentive to what the old roles are still doing in the present.

I see clients in person in Brooklyn and online across New York State. The practice is private-pay, with monthly superbills; many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed 60 to 80 percent through out-of-network benefits.

Common Questions

Does my whole family need to attend?
No. Some of this work happens with one adult - the family is present in the patterns you carry, whether or not anyone else is in the room. And when working together is what is needed, parents, siblings, or adult children join sessions and we work as a group, in a way that honors each person's position.
How is family therapy different from individual therapy?
The lens is different. Individual therapy centers your inner life broadly; family-of-origin work centers the system you grew up in - the roles, loyalties, and unspoken rules - and how it still shapes you now.
Do you work with adult children of emotionally immature parents?
Yes, often. That work usually holds two things at once: grieving the parenting you did not receive, and building the boundaries and self-trust that make the relationship, or the distance, livable now.
Can family therapy help when addiction, mental illness, or grief has entered the family?
Yes. When something heavy enters a family, every relationship in it shifts at once. Therapy offers a place to say what is true, honor where each person stands, and keep the bonds strong enough to carry what has arrived.
Can this help if we are estranged or barely speaking?
Yes. Estrangement, low contact, and no contact each carry their own grief and ambivalence. The work is not to push you toward reunion or rupture, but toward a choice you can stand behind.
Do you offer family therapy in Brooklyn and online?
Both. I see clients in person in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and online across New York State, so we can work together wherever you are in NYC or the state.
Do you take insurance?
This is a private-pay practice, which keeps the work confidential and unhurried. I provide monthly superbills, and many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed 60 to 80 percent through out-of-network benefits.

My husband and I found Avi when we were in a dark place. Avi was thoughtful, patient with us - and funny! We didn't know what we were looking for, but we found a fellow artist. He's so soulful, and he has this magical ability to help you unwind yourself. For that, we're grateful. We've asked him to work with our teenagers, family members, even friends. He's truly singular.

Avi has helped us better understand ourselves and each other, which has had a meaningful impact on our relationship.

We came to Avi because we felt trapped in arguments that would end with neither of us feeling understood. Avi has helped us better understand ourselves and each other, which has had a meaningful impact on the quality of our relationship. We feel more trusting and appreciative of one another and experience less escalation during times of conflict.
