a bright landscape filled with light - just how therapy helps a business setting come through

Why Team Coaching Starts With How We Talk to Each Other

The way people argue in public right now does not stay outside the office. Grievance, mistrust, a focus on only what is wrong, and arguments over definitions show up in team meetings the same way they show up between partners in my couples therapy room.

In couples work, these patterns are what get in the way of progress, and repair is what moves people forward again. The same is true for a team. My work with leaders and teams applies what helps couples recover trust to the places where people need to work together.

Who This Work Is For

  • Your team has split into camps and every meeting picks up the same argument
  • Your management style lands differently than you intend
  • A conflict, a reorganization, or a broken promise has left people guarded
  • You lead people and want to understand your own patterns under pressure
  • You plan a conference, offsite, or HR event and want a talk that actually moves the room

Talks, Team Workshops, and Leadership Coaching

Talks and Keynotes

Built on my recent conference talk, The Four Pillars of Interpersonal and Cultural Repair: what couples therapy teaches about connection in divided times. Four patterns from today's public conversation, grievance, mistrust, problem orientation, and literalism, and four pillars of repair that answer them. For conferences, HR events, and company offsites, with time for small-group discussion.

Team Workshops

A workshop on how these patterns show up at work and what helps a team repair. We focus on team cohesion, management styles, and bringing a divided team back together, with small-group work built in. It also works as workplace conflict coaching for teams that have stopped hearing each other.

Leadership Coaching for Founders and Executives

Individual sessions for founders, executives, and managers who want to understand the posture they bring into a room: how they handle conflict, how they are heard, and how they repair when something breaks. Founder coaching and executive presence coaching, grounded in how people actually relate to each other.

Four Patterns and Four Pillars of Repair

My talk at the NEAFAST 2026 State of Therapy conference names four patterns from today's public conversation that I see in my office, and four pillars of repair that answer them. Each one has a direct place at work.

The pattern01

Grievance

Knowing what the problem is and who is to blame.
The pillar of repairPillar 1

From Grievance to Grief

Letting go of certainty and naming the hurt and the need underneath it.
At workA team stops going over who caused a missed deadline and talks about what it cost them.
The pattern02

Mistrust

Nothing is trusted until it proves itself, and the proof is never enough.
The pillar of repairPillar 2

Trust Before Trustworthiness

Extending trust first, with open eyes, instead of waiting for proof.
At workA manager's trust in their people can bring out their best. Managing to the audit pushes the best work aside.
The pattern03

Problem Orientation

Seeing only what is wrong, until the problems take up the whole picture.
The pillar of repairPillar 3

Orienting Toward Beauty

Asking what we are working for, and not only what we are fighting about.
At workA team names what it does well together, and that becomes something worth protecting.
The pattern04

Literalism

Arguing over definitions, which rarely helps two people reach each other.
The pillar of repairPillar 4

A Poetics of Repair

Language that reaches people where definitions cannot, including specific, honest praise.
At workA leader tells a colleague exactly what they saw them do well. It costs nothing and changes the room.

What Couples Therapy Teaches About Teams

A team that cannot repair after a conflict starts to protect itself instead of doing its best work. People go guarded, decisions slow down, and a manager's words are heard through old disagreements. Team communication training often stops at techniques. This work starts with the patterns underneath them.

As I put it in my talk: division happens at the speed of judgment, and repair happens at the speed of relationship.

Leadership and Team Coaching FAQs

What is leadership and team coaching?
Leadership and team coaching is focused work on how a leader and a team relate to each other: how conflict is handled, how decisions are heard, and how trust is repaired after it breaks. My approach brings what I have learned from years in the couples therapy room to the rooms where people work together.
How is coaching different from therapy?
Coaching focuses on your role, your team, and the way you work with others. Therapy goes further into your personal history and inner life. If coaching opens something you want to explore more deeply, individual therapy is a separate option we can talk about.
What does a team workshop cover?
A workshop looks at four patterns from today's public conversation that show up between colleagues, grievance, mistrust, problem orientation, and literalism, and at four pillars of repair that answer them. It is built around team cohesion, management style, and helping a divided team come back together, with small-group work.
Can you speak at our conference or company event?
Yes. My talk on cultural discourse and repair was first given at a professional conference and can be adapted for HR conferences, leadership events, and company offsites. Request a conversation and tell me about your audience.
Do you work with founders and executives individually?
Yes. Individual leadership coaching is for founders, executives, and managers who want to understand how they lead under pressure and how they handle conflict with their team.
Are sessions online or in person?
Individual coaching sessions are held online. Talks and workshops are arranged with each organization, so we decide the format together.

My husband and I found Avi when we were in a dark place. Avi was thoughtful, patient with us - and funny! We didn't know what we were looking for, but we found a fellow artist. He's so soulful, and he has this magical ability to help you unwind yourself. For that, we're grateful. We've asked him to work with our teenagers, family members, even friends. He's truly singular.

When I speak with Avi, I feel more than heard. His patience has allowed that enlightenment to occur organically.

Avi has helped us better understand ourselves and each other, which has had a meaningful impact on our relationship.

We came to Avi because we felt trapped in arguments that would end with neither of us feeling understood. Avi has helped us better understand ourselves and each other, which has had a meaningful impact on the quality of our relationship. We feel more trusting and appreciative of one another and experience less escalation during times of conflict.
